We chose 5 communities and calculated the density (residents and jobs per hectare) at the neighbourhood and block scale - so that people can understand what the built-form looks like in relation to density targets set out in the Provincial Growth Plan. The visuals and analysis in the 5 case studies also encourage users to look beyond the height of the buildings and consider what attributes of a community make density work. We chose 6 indicators that are key drivers of complete communities to help us illustrate this.

Our methodology can be easily replicated and can be used by municipalities, university courses, or volunteers to measure density at the neighbouhood scale or to undertake additional case studies that could be shared on this website. The existing case studies could also be regularly updated to assess what progress is being made towards becoming complete communities.
